Over the last few days I’ve been engaged as part of the Methodist Church’s Ministerial Candidates Selection Committee.  For those not in the know it is the Committee which selects candidates for ordained ministry.

It is one of Methodism’s best-kept secrets. It is a large committee of over 70 people who work in 8 discernment panels comprising 8 members,  3 panels of reference made up of 3 members, and staffed by 2 coordinators.  In addition, there are 2 psychologists in residence, 4 chaplains who serve both candidates and committee members, and 3 representatives from the Personnel department in Methodist Church House to facilitate the process. It’s a pretty huge operation.

Candidates go through three distinct phases of the discernment process over a period of around 9 months.  Their offer for Methodist ministry is first tested in their local circuit and a vote recorded.  Usually this is part of the autumn…
